Bonnie McAlvin

Flute, Composer

Bonnie McAlvin

"A unique musical voice…the most original of her generation" was the descriptor chosen by Brooklyn legend Robert Dick. Two-time Guggenheim and three-time Prix de Rome winner, John Eaton, said simply, "marvelous!"

Flutist-composer Bonnie McAlvin is winner of the National Flute Association’s national convention performer competition, and has appeared internationally as solo recitalist at venues across the United States, Canada and France. Bonnie was featured at the United Nations as flutist-improviser for ResoNations 2009, an international telematic conference designed to promote diplomacy. Here, Bonnie was chosen as one of a select group of performers from Northern Ireland, South Korea, the United States and Canada to motivate negotiation. Bonnie is known for her imaginative and compelling interpretations of both the classic flute repertoire and cutting-edge new music, and has the rare ability to play multiphonics on the flute—a technique somewhat akin to playing double-stops on a string instrument: the flute must play two notes simultaneously! In 2011, she was invited by the National Flute Association to appear as soloist at their annual convention and was recently the guest artist for the 2014 International Electro-Acoustic Music Festival, where she worked firsthand with composer John Eaton to realize his 1981 work for flute and soprano, A Greek Vision.

Bonnie is on faculty at the Special Music School of New York City (Kaufman Center, Manhattan), at the Lucy Moses School, at Adelphi University in Garden City, NY, and also teaches privately. For more info, including calendar and media, see www.bonniemcalvin.net.
